Dukes oust Phoenix from sectional tournament

The Ober­lin var­sity base­ball team suf­fered an early exit from the sec­tional tour­na­ment, los­ing to the Welling­ton Dukes 10-2 Tues­day afternoon.

The Phoenix had no answer for Wellington’s start­ing pitcher, Erik Felan, who pitched three-hitter and struck out 12 in seven innings of work.

The game was moved to Cuya­hoga County Com­mu­nity College-West due to poor field con­di­tions at Welling­ton High School because of recent rain­fall. The game had been sus­pended for rain Mon­day, and con­cluded Tuesday.

Oberlin’s Patrick Gray was the only Phoenix to get an extra-base hit with a double.

Ober­lin went into the bot­tom half of the first with a one run lead, but were unable to hold on as Welling­ton erupted in the home half of the inning.

Bran­don Pritt, Oberlin’s starter strug­gled early, giv­ing up six runs, two earned, on one hit and four walks with­out record­ing and out. Jared Peters came on in relief for the Phoenix and went the rest of the way sur­ren­der­ing 4 runs over six inning.

The major­ity of the Dukes 10 runs came off the bats of three play­ers, Fehlan, Jacob Grim­mett, and Daryn Broad­wa­ter. Fehlan and Broad­wa­ter each had two RBIs in the game, while Grimmett’s dou­ble was the only extra-base hit the Dukes needed for the win.

While the loss ends the hopes of the Phoenix sea­son, there’s still a lit­tle more work to be done with three games remain­ing on the schedule.

Next up, Ober­lin will travel to Lutheran West to take on the Long­horns today at 4:30 p.m. for a con­fer­ence game. They then travel to West­ern Reserve Fri­day, before wrap­ping up the sea­son at home against Fairview at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
