Dukes oust Phoenix from sectional tournament
The Oberlin varsity baseball team suffered an early exit from the sectional tournament, losing to the Wellington Dukes 10-2 Tuesday afternoon.
The Phoenix had no answer for Wellington’s starting pitcher, Erik Felan, who pitched three-hitter and struck out 12 in seven innings of work.
The game was moved to Cuyahoga County Community College-West due to poor field conditions at Wellington High School because of recent rainfall. The game had been suspended for rain Monday, and concluded Tuesday.
Oberlin’s Patrick Gray was the only Phoenix to get an extra-base hit with a double.
Oberlin went into the bottom half of the first with a one run lead, but were unable to hold on as Wellington erupted in the home half of the inning.
Brandon Pritt, Oberlin’s starter struggled early, giving up six runs, two earned, on one hit and four walks without recording and out. Jared Peters came on in relief for the Phoenix and went the rest of the way surrendering 4 runs over six inning.
The majority of the Dukes 10 runs came off the bats of three players, Fehlan, Jacob Grimmett, and Daryn Broadwater. Fehlan and Broadwater each had two RBIs in the game, while Grimmett’s double was the only extra-base hit the Dukes needed for the win.
While the loss ends the hopes of the Phoenix season, there’s still a little more work to be done with three games remaining on the schedule.
Next up, Oberlin will travel to Lutheran West to take on the Longhorns today at 4:30 p.m. for a conference game. They then travel to Western Reserve Friday, before wrapping up the season at home against Fairview at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
