In order to recognize the creative achievement in art by students in grades 7-12, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Program, the largest annual art competition in America was founded in 1923. The Scholastic Art Program in Lorain County receives major financial support from the Nordson Corporation Foundation, and additional support from Lorain County Community College, the Stocker Foundation and the LCCC Foundation for the regional art competition.
The mission of the Lorain County Regional Scholastic Art Exhibit is “to encourage and recognize excellence in the visual arts and to provide guidance and support to teens for whom creativity may be a life path.” The Lorain County Regional Scholastic Art Exhibit Committee is an all-volunteer not-for-profit organization. It has served Lorain County students in grades 7-12 for 44 years. This regional network of art teachers encourages and celebrates the creativity of the county’s teenagers, providing inspiration and validation for Lorain County’s next generation of visual artists.
Although 49 pieces were submitted, the 44th Annual Lorain County Regional Scholastic Art Exhibition included artwork from 28 Oberlin High School students with 35 works of art accepted into the show. They were on exhibit at the Beth K. Stocker Art Gallery at Stocker Arts Center, Lorain County Community College. All the outstanding works in the exhibition were awarded a Gold Key (the most outstanding work), a Silver Key (a second place award) or an Honorable Mention in the exhibit.
Oberlin High School was represented by both art and ceramics classes.
Students from teacher Danielle Camino’s art classes participated in the Scholastic Art competition.
A Gold Key was awarded to sophomore Elijah Wood whose work will advance to New York City for national judging.
Sophomore Neva Rustad received two Silver Keys. Honorable Mentions were given to the following students: Sojourner Davidson, Kristina Vukovich (2), Kalif Townsel, Kierrah Pritchett, Jazz Thomas, Taylor Egan (3), Hannah Kim (2), Brandon Pritt, Melvin Medina, Rachel Mentzer, Forrest Locklear, Wyatt Locklear, Kayla Kuzak, Kevin Boyer, Taylor Anderson, Tyler Thomas, Emily Rasmussen (2), Isaac Kim (2), and Marissa Hart.
