• SUMMER CONCERT SERIES The Geeze Cats will perform at Clark Bandstand in Tappan Square in Oberlin on Friday, July 29 as part of the summer concert series at 7 p.m. Bring lawnchairs and blankets for seating. Free.
• CIVIL WAR CAMPS Limited openings remain to reserve a space for boys and girls ages 8-13 to take part in one of the upcoming week-long summer camps offered by the award-winning Oberlin Heritage Center. Topics include: Kids & World Cultures (August 8-12) and Architecture Camp (August 15-19). Activities will be held at the Oberlin Depot (240 S. Main St.) from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The camp fee is $95 per child, with a $10 discount for children and grandchildren of Oberlin Heritage Center members; some scholarship assistance is available for those who qualify. • SOLDIERS & CIVILIANS HISTORY WALK Saturday, July 30 is the last chance this summer to take part in the Civil War History Walk offered by the Oberlin Heritage Center. Visitors will be introduced to local perspectives, notable figures, and interesting stories from both the battlefield and the home front. Advance reservations are necessary; adults are $6, OHC members and current college students are $5, and children are free (most likely to be enjoyed by ages 9 and up). • COME TO THE FAIR Visit the Oberlin Heritage Center during the Lorain County Family Fun Fair on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and enjoy all sorts of old-fashioned amusements including special Civil War era activities for kids. Drop in on historic school lessons and games in the Little Red Schoolhouse or enjoy “at-your-own-pace” mini-tours of the beautifully preserved 1866 Monroe House and 1884 Jewett House. • I SPY OBERLIN History and Architecture Scavenger Hunt The Oberlin Heritage Center hosts this fun guided walk through historic Oberlin on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 3 to 4 p.m. Designed for children ages 5-11 with an adult companion. • OBERLIN DRUM CIRCLE meets at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at the Clark Bandstand on Tappan Square. Bring drums and percussion instruments if you have them,or just come with an open mind and fun-loving spirit. The rain-out venue is the Meeting House of First Church.
• OBERLIN PUBLIC LIBRARY board of trustees will hold a regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 5 p.m., at the library. A records commission meeting will be held at the start of the meeting. The meetings are open to the public.
• SPAGHETTI DINNER BENEFIT The Friends of the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office will sponsor a spaghetti dinner on Sunday, July 31, from noon to 5 p.m. to benefit the family of Lorain County deputy sheriff Tom Tomasheski. Tomasheski’s wife and son were killed in a crash in June when they were struck head on by a drunk driver. Tomasheski remains in serious condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. His daughter was released and is in rehabilitation. The benefit will include a Chinese raffle, silent auctions, and 50/50 drawings, with all proceeds going directly to the family.
