• SUM­MER CON­CERT SERIES The Dan Zola Orches­tra will per­form at Clark Band­stand in Tap­pan Square in Ober­lin on Fri­day, Aug. 5, as part of the sum­mer con­cert series at 7 p.m. Bring lawn­chairs and blan­kets for seat­ing. Free.

• EAGLES NEST The Pitts­field Town­ship His­tor­i­cal Soci­ety will meet at 7 p.m. at the Pitts­field Town Hall on the cor­ner of Rt. 58 and 303 on Thurs­day, Aug. 11.

The pro­gram will be pre­sented by Grant Thomp­son from the Lorain County Metro Parks who will talk about the Great Eagle’s Nest in Brown­helm Town­ship, the largest one in the world. All are wel­come to hear the story of what hap­pened to the nest.

• OBER­LIN UNI­TAR­IAN UNI­VER­SAL­IST FEL­LOW­SHIP meets at the Ober­lin Early Child­hood Cen­ter, 317 E. Col­lege St., at 10 a.m. Sun­day morn­ing. Aug. 7: Sci­ence can Answer Moral Ques­tions. Cindy Frantz of the Ober­lin Col­lege Psy­chol­ogy Depart­ment will be dis­cus­sion leader. There will be a TED Talk fea­tur­ing sec­u­lar advo­cate Sam Har­ris, who argues that sci­ence can and should be an author­ity on moral issues, shap­ing human val­ues and set­ting out what con­sti­tutes a good life. All are welcome.

• MAC­U­LAR DEGEN­ER­A­TION SUP­PORT GROUP will meet on Thurs­day, Aug. 11 at 4 p.m. in the Green Room at Kendal for the web­cast “Keep­ing Fit: Fall Pre­ven­tion and Exer­cise for Older Adults with Vision Loss.”

• RAW FOODS POTLUCK A raw foods potluck will take place on Sun­day, Aug. 7 begin­ning at 2 p.m. a tthe Ober­lin Pub­lic Library. Helen Kopp will present the pro­gram, “Pre­serv­ing Your Foods by Fer­men­ta­tion.” Par­tic­i­pants are asked to bring fruit or salad for six and their own plate and utensils.

• CIVIL WAR CAMPS Lim­ited open­ings remain to reserve a space for boys and girls ages 8-13 to take part in one of the upcom­ing week-long sum­mer camps offered by the award-winning Ober­lin Her­itage Cen­ter. Top­ics include: Kids & World Cul­tures (Aug. 8-12) and Archi­tec­ture Camp (Aug. 15-19). Activ­i­ties will be held at the Ober­lin Depot (240 S. Main St.) from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The camp fee is $95 per child, with a $10 dis­count for chil­dren and grand­chil­dren of Ober­lin Her­itage Cen­ter mem­bers; some schol­ar­ship assis­tance is avail­able for those who qual­ify. • OBER­LIN AARP #395 will meet on Tues­day, Aug. 9, at the New Rus­sia Town­ship Hall, 46268 But­ter­nut Ridge Rd. Social hour begins at 11 a.m., fol­lowed by a potluck lunch at noon. The theme of the meet­ing will be “The Good Old Sum­mer Time.” Pho­tog­ra­pher Dan Mes­saros will present a slide show of last year’s Lorain County Fair. • OBER­LIN PUB­LIC LIBRARY board of trustees will hold a reg­u­lar meet­ing on Tues­day, Aug. 9, at 5 p.m., at the library. A records com­mis­sion meet­ing will be held at the start of the meet­ing. The meet­ings are open to the public.

• BIKE FOR YOUR HEALTH Learn about the indoor cycling sen­sa­tion, spin­ning, at the Lorain County MetroParks Splash­Zone, Tues­day, Aug. 16, at 9 p.m. Bikes will be pro­vided. This activ­ity includes a stren­u­ous hike.

• DETROIT HIS­TORY FOR THE SOUL BUS TOUR The Ober­lin Under­ground Rail­road Soci­ety (O.U.R.S.) will spon­sor a bus tour to Detroit, Fri­day and Sat­ur­day, Aug. 19-20. Learn about the his­tory of Lewis Col­lege of Busi­ness, Michigan’s only his­tor­i­cally black col­lege, and a spe­cial national archive exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum, and African and African Amer­i­can art, and cul­ture through museum vis­its, the African World Fes­ti­val, and other events. • THE CIVIL WAR: Ober­lin Per­spec­tives on the Home Front and War Front. The begin­ning of the Civil War con­sumed the thoughts of many across the nation in 1861, and espe­cially so in Ober­lin, where the townspeople’s abo­li­tion­ist spirit was known far and wide. Karyn Nor­wood weaves together both lively and poignant accounts from the war front and the home front in Ober­lin dur­ing a free pub­lic pro­gram on Thurs­day, Aug. 18, at 7:15 p.m. at Kendal at Oberlin’s Heiser Auditorium.

• MONTHLY FOOD DIS­TRI­B­U­TION for eli­gi­ble res­i­dents of Welling­ton, Ober­lin, Welling­ton, and New Rus­sia, Carlisle, Kip­ton, Brighton, LaGrange, Pen­field, Cam­den, Hunt­ing­ton, Rochester, Pitts­field and Welling­ton town­ships through Ober­lin Com­mu­nity Ser­vices, 285 S.
