• SUMMER CONCERT SERIES The Dan Zola Orchestra will perform at Clark Bandstand in Tappan Square in Oberlin on Friday, Aug. 5, as part of the summer concert series at 7 p.m. Bring lawnchairs and blankets for seating. Free.
• EAGLES NEST The Pittsfield Township Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. at the Pittsfield Town Hall on the corner of Rt. 58 and 303 on Thursday, Aug. 11.
The program will be presented by Grant Thompson from the Lorain County Metro Parks who will talk about the Great Eagle’s Nest in Brownhelm Township, the largest one in the world. All are welcome to hear the story of what happened to the nest.
• OBERLIN UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FELLOWSHIP meets at the Oberlin Early Childhood Center, 317 E. College St., at 10 a.m. Sunday morning. Aug. 7: Science can Answer Moral Questions. Cindy Frantz of the Oberlin College Psychology Department will be discussion leader. There will be a TED Talk featuring secular advocate Sam Harris, who argues that science can and should be an authority on moral issues, shaping human values and setting out what constitutes a good life. All are welcome.
• MACULAR DEGENERATION SUPPORT GROUP will meet on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 4 p.m. in the Green Room at Kendal for the webcast “Keeping Fit: Fall Prevention and Exercise for Older Adults with Vision Loss.”
• RAW FOODS POTLUCK A raw foods potluck will take place on Sunday, Aug. 7 beginning at 2 p.m. a tthe Oberlin Public Library. Helen Kopp will present the program, “Preserving Your Foods by Fermentation.” Participants are asked to bring fruit or salad for six and their own plate and utensils.
• CIVIL WAR CAMPS Limited openings remain to reserve a space for boys and girls ages 8-13 to take part in one of the upcoming week-long summer camps offered by the award-winning Oberlin Heritage Center. Topics include: Kids & World Cultures (Aug. 8-12) and Architecture Camp (Aug. 15-19). Activities will be held at the Oberlin Depot (240 S. Main St.) from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The camp fee is $95 per child, with a $10 discount for children and grandchildren of Oberlin Heritage Center members; some scholarship assistance is available for those who qualify. • BIKE FOR YOUR HEALTH Learn about the indoor cycling sensation, spinning, at the Lorain County MetroParks SplashZone, Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 9 p.m. Bikes will be provided. This activity includes a strenuous hike.
• DETROIT HISTORY FOR THE SOUL BUS TOUR The Oberlin Underground Railroad Society (O.U.R.S.) will sponsor a bus tour to Detroit, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 19-20. Learn about the history of Lewis College of Business, Michigan’s only historically black college, and a special national archive exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum, and African and African American art, and culture through museum visits, the African World Festival, and other events. • THE CIVIL WAR: Oberlin Perspectives on the Home Front and War Front. The beginning of the Civil War consumed the thoughts of many across the nation in 1861, and especially so in Oberlin, where the townspeople’s abolitionist spirit was known far and wide. Karyn Norwood weaves together both lively and poignant accounts from the war front and the home front in Oberlin during a free public program on Thursday, Aug. 18, at 7:15 p.m. at Kendal at Oberlin’s Heiser Auditorium.

• BACK TO SCHOOL BONANZA Zion Community Development Corporation and Mt.
